Nutrition Tip for a Healthy Holiday Season

The holidays are a time for gathering with friends and family—and your favorite foods should be a part of this joyous season. So remember to show yourself some kindness and compassion.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts on how to stay healthy and active throughout the season:

❌ Avoid Restriction

Dietary restrictions can be harmful to both mind and body. Skipping meals or avoiding the foods you love puts your body in survival mode and can slow your metabolism.

Do:

  • Eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day

  • Arrive at dinner energized and nourished

Don’t:

  • Skip breakfast or eat too light of a lunch before a big holiday meal

  • Arrive starving—it can lead to overeating

🍽 If You Don’t Love It, Don’t Eat It

Do:

  • Fill your plate with color: veggies, fruits, complex carbs, and protein

  • Include your favorite holiday foods

  • Take your time and enjoy your meal

  • Enjoy dessert!

If you overeat, it’s okay—make a mental note of how it felt and move on.

Don’t:

  • Feel guilty or dwell on it. Take a walk or hydrate instead.

🛌 Get Rest, Minimize Stress!

Do:

  • Take at least 5 minutes for yourself (journaling, meditating, or reading)

  • Prioritize sleep and recovery

  • Plan ahead to avoid being overwhelmed

Don’t:

  • Overcommit or say yes to everything

  • Skip rest—fatigue increases cravings and lowers self-control

💧 Hydrate!

Do:

  • Sip water throughout the day

  • Stay hydrated if you’re being active

Don’t:

  • Drink alcohol when dehydrated—it intensifies negative effects

  • Forget “water first, alcohol second”

🏃 Be Active!

Do:

  • Try increasing workouts (e.g., from 2x to 3–4x/week)

  • Move your body however you can—run, walk, take a class, or dance

  • Use exercise as a stress reliever and mood booster

Don’t:

  • Use the holidays as an excuse to abandon your goals

  • Let fatigue take over—plan ahead and stay flexible

🎯 Conclusion

Prioritizing your physical health (sleep, nutrition, movement) and your mental well-being (mindfulness, boundaries) can keep the holidays feeling joyful—not draining.

Wishing you a very happy and peaceful holiday season!
