New evidence suggests that, just like heart-pumping aerobic exercise, strength training may help older adults live longer. However, combining both types of exercise appears to offer the greatest longevity benefits, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (November 2022).
The study analyzed surveys from nearly 100,000 men and women ages 55 to 74, tracking their exercise habits over a nine-year follow-up period. Participants reported their engagement in moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise and weight lifting.
Key Findings
β
Strength training alone was linked to a 9% to 22% lower risk of death.
β
Moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise reduced mortality risk by 24% to 34%.
β
The biggest benefits were seen in individuals who did both types of exercise, with a 41% to 47% lower risk of death compared to those who did not exercise.
This research highlights the importance of a balanced fitness routine that includes both cardio and strength training. For those looking to improve their longevity, strength, and overall health, incorporating weight lifting into workouts is a proven strategy.
